A. Philip Randolph, ca. 1912.
A newcomer, practically alone in Harlem, Randolph turned to the black church. He joined the Epworth League -- a youth group with a theatre club -- to pursue social and intellectual interests, then formed the current-affairs Independent Political Council to hone his skills as an agitator by giving lectures and conducting debates.
