Letter to George Meany from the 1959 Petition Campaign and Youth March for Integrated Schools, January 12, 1959.
Martin Luther King, Jr., John LaFarge, and A. Philip Randolph invited George Meany to sponsor the 1959 Petition Campaign and serve as a co-chair of the committee. In response, Meany wrote, in a letter dated January 16, 1959, "I will be happy to endorse the petition and sign my name to it; however I do not feel I should accept your invitation to act as a co-chairman of the Petition Campaign for Integrated Schools of 1959....The heavy pressures of my work at this time would preclude any possibility of my taking an active part in the work of the committee."
