Lesson 11: Entering a URL in the Address Bar
Overview
The Internet allows us to access information on computers around the world. Each web site has an address or URL (Uniform Resource Locator). A web browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer can read the address to display information on a web site. Microsoft Internet Explorer is provided with Windows XP.
The address for the National Labor College is http://www.nlc.edu/index.html. The parts of the Internet address are explained below.
- http:// - Internet addresses must be prefixed with http//: (Internet Explorer allows you to omit http:// and will add it automatically)
- www – the file is located on the World Wide Web
- nlc.edu - the domain name of the website
- .edu – educational institutions
- .gov - government agencies
- .com - private companies
- .org - organizations
- .net - networks
- /index.html - a reference to a particular file
If you don’t know the address of a website, you can use a Search Engine (yahoo.com, msn.com) to search for the site.
This tutorial demonstrates accessing a website by entering the URL in the address line of a web browser.
