Rail Workers Hazardous Materials Training Program

Hazardous materials transportation/chemical emergency response training and DOT Train the Trainer programs are conducted on the NLC campus and regionally. For complete information, including program training schedules and registration, visit the Rail Workers Hazardous Materials Training website.

The training, eligible for three academic credits from NLC, addresses OSHA and DOT required procedures, different levels of response, and worker protection, radiological transportation and training techniques . HazMat awareness Training includes advanced classroom instruction, intensive hands-on drills, a simulated hazmat response in full safety gear, incident command, WMD awareness and security training, as well as all components to complete the OSHA 10-Hour Outreach Course.

DOT Train the Trainer courses include adult learning methods, teaching techniques, effective communication and practice teaching sessions.  All participants leave fully armed with curriculum to deliver training back at their work sites, labor halls or communities.

DOE radiological transportation training includes advanced classroom instruction, intensive hands-on drills and small group work activities designed to familiriaize participants with the dangers and protective actions necessary when transporting radioactive material. The programs are funded through the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and The Department of Transportation with additional support from the North American Railway Foundation (NARF). Since 1990, hazardous materials training has been provided to over 25,000 rail workers from the following nine rail unions cooperating in the training program:

  • Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division
  • Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen International
  • Brotherhood of Boilermakers
  • National Conference of Firemen & Oilers, SEIU
  • Transport Workers Union
  • Transportation-Communication International Union,  Brotherhood of Railway Carmen
