Kaiser Institute Health Care Courses
Because workers need an in-depth knowledge of the rapidly changing health care industry as well as the skills to secure the best possible benefits for their unions, the National Labor College, in partnership with Kaiser Permanente, established the Kaiser Permanente Health Care Institute (KPHCI). The KPHCI will offer courses in the healthcare field as a part of our Bachelor's Degree.
One health care course is currently available to students. Employer-Based Health Care: Impact of the New Law (LBUA-4118) is a semester-long course that begins online in the spring semester on January 9, 2012, includes a weekend residency from February 3-6, 2012, and ends on April 20, 2012. (3 semester credits)

LBUA-4118: Employer-Based Health Care: Impact of the New Law
This course will analyze the 2010 Affordable Care Act which will ensure universal coverage for all Americans beginning in 2014 and its impact on labor union members and health care bargaining. Topics include the impact of the new law on the U.S. health care system as a whole, the timeline for implementation, changes in financing, public and private insurance rules, employer and employee contributions, benefits and other provisions that will impact current benefit plans. During the weekend residency, students will learn more about the status of the law and current policy developments, union strategies at the bargaining table, and what the labor movement is doing to influence the implementation of the law. In the online portion of the course, students will examine the parts of the Health Care Reform Act (before the weekend residency) and each student will complete a research project (after the weekend residency) chosen from a list provided by the instructor, but customized to his/her own interests, experience, and union setting.
