Workers Memorial Day Ceremony Announced

National Labor College (NLC) Announces
Workers Memorial Day Ceremony
Friday, April 27, 2012

To help mark Workers Memorial Day, National Labor College (NLC) is hosting an afternoon of activities open to the public on Friday, April 27, 2012. In addition to honoring the workers who die each year, this year's program will pay special tribute to first responders and public employees, who play critical roles in creating safe and healthy workplaces and communities.

Please join us on the NLC campus in Silver Spring, Maryland for the following events:

  • 1:15 - 2:45 p.m.: Workers Memorial Day Symposium - First Responders, Public Employees, and the Health and Safety of Workers and their Communities - Location: Auditorium (Building 8), Room 8100.

Peg Seminario, Director of Safety and Health, AFL-CIO, will act as moderator. Panelists include: Joseph McCartin, PhD, Associate Professor of History, Georgetown University, Jacob Remes, PhD, Assistant Professor of Public Affairs, Empire State College, and Daniel Katz, PhD, Dean of Labor Studies, National Labor College.

  • 3:00 - 3:45 p.m.: Workers Memorial Day Ceremony - Location: Outside of the Auditorium (Building 8) at the NLC Workers Memorial.

Paula Peinovich, President, National Labor College will lead the ceremony. David Michaels, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health, Sara Nelson, International Vice President, Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, and Cecil Roberts, President, United Mine Workers, are honored guests of the college.

  • 3:45 - 4:15 p.m.: Reception - Location: Kirkland Conference Center (Building 9).

  • Through these events, we rededicate ourselves to the work of preventing the nearly 5,000 deaths that occur annually from workplace injuries or illnesses in the U.S.

    National Workers Memorial

Dedicated on April 28, 2010, the National Workers Memorial is made up of granite benches and engraved bricks that act as permanent reminders of those who lost their lives on the job. It provides a place of reflection while building awareness of the human toll caused by unsafe working conditions. Memorial funds support educational programs that provide union members and leaders with the tools and knowledge to improve workplace safety.
