NLC Scholarships
The National Labor College recognizes the impact the cost of higher education can have on working adults and their families. Through the generosity of our alumni, staff, friends and partners, the NLC is pleased to offer a variety of scholarships that allow us to support our students' unique financial needs.
General Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a U. S. citizen.
- Must meet defined criteria of the respective scholarship.
- Must be enrolled at a minimum of half-time status (6 credit hours) during the semester seeking assistance.
- Must maintain satisfactory academic progress, including a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
- Must adhere to the online participation and attendance policies.
- Must be fully matriculated (at least 56 transfer/earned credits)
How to Apply
Submit a completed National Labor College Scholarship Request Form by the following deadlines:
- Summer 2012 - apply by Monday, April 9, 2012
- Fall 2012 - apply by Monday, August 6, 2012
- Spring 2013 – apply by Monday, December 10, 2012
Complete the current year Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.
Recipient Selection Process
Scholarship awards are determined by the National Labor College Scholarship Committee unless otherwise noted. Recipients will be notified in writing of the outcome of the scholarship process.
NLC Scholarships
New Building Trades President's Award
Union Plus is offering the Union Plus NLC Building Trades President's Awards, a total of $13,500 in scholarships for building trades union members who enroll in SPS degree completion programs. Seventeen scholarships are available. Current dues-paying members of building trades unions offering Union Plus programs are eligible to apply: BAC, Boilermakers, IBEW, IBT, Insulators, Ironworkers, IUEC, IUPAT, LIUNA, OPCMIA, Roofers, SMWIA, and UA. Union Plus National Labor College Scholarship
Sponsored by Union Privilege, this scholarship represents the largest single contribution to the NLC scholarship program and results in annual awards up to $25,000. This scholarship is open to any AFL-CIO affiliated union member enrolled at the NLC.
AETNA Healthcare Scholarship for Women and People of Color
NLC, in partnership with Kaiser Permanente, established this scholarship for women and minority students enrolled in healthcare courses pursuant to a Bachelors degree. This scholarship covers tuition, fees, and housing during the Week in Residence.
Alumni Association Scholarship
Established in 1982 by the National Labor College Alumni Association and maintained through contributions from the alumni, faculty, staff and the Board of Trustees of the College, this scholarship benefits students who demonstrate financial need. Awards range from $250 to $1,000.
New IAFF Scholarships
Scholarships are available to IAFF members in good standing who apply to an NLC Degree Program. Each Scholarship Award covers Tuition and Fees for one 3-credit course. Download Flyer (PDF).
New IBEW Scholarships
Scholarships are available to IBEW members in good standing who apply to an NLC Degree Program. Each Scholarship Award covers Tuition and Fees for one 3-credit course. Download Flyer (PDF).
Jim Crane Scholarship
Friends and family established this scholarship in honor of Jim Crane, long-time organizer and activist for the American Federation of Teachers. Each year, one to two awards ranging from $250 to $300 will be given to students majoring in organizational dynamics.
Winn & Elaine Newman Scholarship
Established in honor of the late Winn Newman, two scholarships are awarded annually to deserving women and minority students entering into Bachelor’s degree programs at the NLC. Each award covers the cost of one three-credit course.
Stanley Ruttenberg Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in memory of Stanley Ruttenberg, labor organizer, labor educator, and chief economist for the AFL-CIO. Awards are based on financial need and range from $250 to $300.
Ken Young Scholarship
Established in honor of Kenneth Young, Special Assistant to President Lane Kirkland, this award offers two $500 scholarships per year.
National Labor College President’s Scholarships
The National Labor College President’s Scholarships, funded in large part by HSBC, are awarded to students who are active union members and newly enrolling at the College. Awarded annually, the number and amount of awards vary.
Union-Based Scholarships
AFSCME members:
Nadra Floyd Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is open to all AFSCME members and staff who want to increase their leadership skills and to assist in the continued development of the trade union movement. This scholarship provides $2,000 annually and may be applied toward tuition, books, and housing.
Joey Parisi Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is available to full-time staff of AFSCME locals, councils, or the international that has substantial organizing responsibilities. One scholarship of $10,000 will be awarded annually to cover tuition, housing and transportation.
IAFF members:
The IAFF awards several scholarships annually to members. Please contact the IAFF Education Department for more information.
IAMAW members:
International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Scholarship
This endowed scholarship is available to members of the IAMAW enrolled in the Senior Block or who are first time enrollees at the Winpisinger Center. Awards range from $1,000 to $1,500.
SEIU members:
Ladin Memorial Scholarship for SEIU Members
Established in honor of the late Bonnie Ladin, scholarships are awarded annually to SEIU members, their children or local staff. The awards are one-time, $2,500 scholarships for use in the Labor Studies degree program at the NLC.
UA members:
Sergeant David Coullard Valor, Discipline & Vision Scholarship
Established in honor of the late David Coullard, this scholarship is awarded to United States Armed Forces veterans or family members enrolled at the NLC.
