Photo of Alex GarciaAlejandro “Alex” Garcia, an electrician and a member of IBEW Local 357, doesn’t need to pick up the newspaper or watch the nightly news to learn about the impact of the nation’s recession.

With unemployment hovering just under 13 percent in Nevada, Alex found himself part of that dreaded statistic. After the initial sting of being laid off, he set out to finish what he started years before: earning his degree in Business Administration.

Going back to college is a good thing to do. I wish I had started earlier.

Get off the Sidelines and Get Started

Photo of Alex Garcia with his FamilyAlex had earned 90 credits for his past college courses and for the completion of his apprenticeship program. A year after starting his NLC coursework, Alex is already making plans to receive his diploma at this year’s NLC commencement ceremony.

“It was the best thing I could do,” said Alex. “I would tell other union members who are undecided about finishing their degree to get off the sidelines and get started.”

Support Helps Alex Follow His Dreams

Alex found that the financial support from a Union Plus scholarship, the flexibility of online classes, and the access to professors made returning to college more manageable than he had anticipated.

“The scholarship helped a lot especially because I’ve been out of work. It allowed me to buy books and pay for my tuition; I was glad that I didn’t have to take out more loans,” explains the father of two young daughters.
