On December 8 and 9, 2000, the Phoenix chapter of "Justice for Roofers" participated in a Day of Action, leafleting prospective home buyers. On March 23, 2001, Roofers Union Local 135 of Phoenix signed a contract with Diversified Roofing Corp. The union won many concessions, including an hourly pay rate of $12.50 and paid overtime. Throughout the Southwest, roofers are among the most abused workers. They are often forced to work in dangerous, conditions, on houses they could never hope to afford. In response to growing exploitation in the housing industry, a national coalition of religious, civic, retiree, and labor organizations has organized under the banner "Justice for Roofers."
