When Furrs grocery stores, represented by UFCE Local 1564, declared bankruptcy in 2001, some New Mexico stores were bought by Lowes. The Lowe's management refused to recognize the contract, did not hire back most union employees, reduced the wages for 300 jobs to just above minimum wage, and eliminated most benefits.
