When Furrs grocery stores, represented by UFCE Local 1564, declared bankruptcy in 2001, some New Mexico stores were bought by Lowes. The Lowes' management refused to recognize the contract, did not hire back most union employees, reduced the wages for 300 jobs, and eliminated most benefits.
Roofers in Tucson, active in the Justice for Roofers campaign, were fired by a roofing subcontractor of KB Home. On February 27, 2002, 50 roofers, mostly immigrants, walked into the showroom of KB Home in Tucson to meet with HB management. The next day the roofers were reinstated to their jobs.
A 2002 demonstration in downtown Denver led by SEIU's Justice for Janitors brings violations of contract agreements to the attention of the public and downtown building owners. Janitors (mostly immigrant women), Denver Area Labor Federation members, and Southwest Organizing School students attended the demonstration.
